It can be so difficult to deal with someone who is displaying toxic behaviors. In these cases, we have to ask ourselves if it is worth it to keep this person in our lives.

I suggest that you take a look at the info in our app titled “Is this friendship worth saving?” for some tips that you can use to think through whether or not you’d like to keep this person in your life.
If you decide that you do wish to keep this person around, there are a few things you can do:
1. Make a plan to discuss the toxic behaviors with this person. Use “I” statements to let them know what you need and want. For example, “I feel left out when you hang out with our other friends but don’t invite me. I want to be included more.”
2. Be clear with your boundaries. Remember that “no” is a complete sentence and you do not have to explain yourself if you set a boundary.
3. Compassion has the effect of putting the mind at ease and giving us the strength to cope with obstacles in everyday life. Consider trying to have compassion for this person. Review the “2-Minute Compassion for Others” video in the app.
Over the next week, try to decide whether or not you want to continue having this person in your life. If you decide you do want to continue being around them, try at least two of the suggestions above and see how it feels!
